Stapled booklets, perfect-bound books, prospectuses, lookbooks and catalogues. We’ll advise on stock, binding and finish, from matt lamination to foil blocking on GF Smith paper.
A stapled (saddle-stitched) booklet is held together with staples through the fold. It suits brochures, programmes and short publications, and it needs a page count that divides by four. A perfect-bound book has pages glued into a flat spine, the way a paperback is made. It suits longer publications (usually from around 40 pages), prospectuses and anything that sits on a shelf with a printed spine. Other bindings are possible on request.
The cover and the inside pages are chosen separately. A heavier cover feels substantial in the hand, with inside pages in a lighter weight to keep the thickness sensible. Coated papers give rich photography and sharp colour; uncoated papers feel more natural and suit text-heavy books. We can specify premium papers such as GF Smith when the job calls for it. Tell us how the piece will be used and we’ll recommend a stock.
Matt lamination gives a soft, modern cover and protects it. Foil blocking adds metallic detail to titles or logos. These are the finishes that make a brochure feel premium, and we’ll tell you honestly when they are worth the cost.
There is no minimum order, so a hundred copies of a limited-run book is as normal for us as a large run.
A matt-laminated booklet for Wesleyan, turned round for an urgent meeting and delivered by hand. A foil-blocked, perfect-bound book for Nottingham Business School, printed on GF Smith paper. Limited-run books on uncoated stock for TSPTR, sold to collectors. Lookbooks for Philip Watts Design.
A stapled booklet needs a page count that divides by four, and it is much cheaper to find that out before you design than after. Send pages in reading order, not as printer’s spreads, unless we ask for spreads. Keep important content out of the gutter (the fold in the middle), where it can disappear. And a heavy cover on a thin booklet looks and feels better than the other way round.
Tell us what you need, roughly how many and by when. We advise and quote, check your artwork, get your go-ahead, then print, finish and deliver across the UK. The whole process is on how we work.
